Last month I was able to attend Habitat on the Hill <\/span>\u2014 <\/span>virtually <\/span>\u2014 <\/span>with 700 Habitat <\/span>for Humanity (HFH) <\/span>affiliates. Even from 1800 miles, we had a powerful, collective voice that called for adequate<\/span>, affordable<\/span> housing<\/span>. Housing is a unifying issue. Habitat for Humanity International CEO Jonathan T.M. <\/span>Reckford<\/span> started the conference reminding us that housing is a nonpartisan issue: <\/span>everyone<\/span> can identify with the<\/span> need<\/span> for<\/span> a safe<\/span> place to <\/span>live<\/span>, <\/span>where they can thrive and contribute to communities that nurture all residents.<\/span> \"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>We shared ideas, listened with intent and <\/span>the <\/span>Habitat<\/span> network<\/span> conducted 400 Hill Day meetings with members of Congress and their staff<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>While HFH is known for building homes, we are also strong advocates for homeownership<\/span> \u2014 <\/span>advocating for policy solutions to advance access to safe, decent and affordable homes<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Why? Because m<\/span>illions in the U.S. struggle with housing costs. Even before the pandemic, 1 in 3 families were paying more than 30% of their income on housing costs. Worse, 1 in 6 families were already paying half or more on housing <\/span>\u2014 <\/span>a level <\/span>deemed<\/span> \u201c<\/span>severely cost-burdened.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>We <\/span>advocate for <\/span>a<\/span> continuum of housing solutions that promote social and economic mobility<\/span> \u2014<\/span> the pipeline to go from rent<\/span>ing<\/span> to own<\/span>ing<\/span> is disappearing. While we aren<\/span>\u2019<\/span>t in the business of building rental <\/span>units, <\/span>we <\/span>are looked at as <\/span>a<\/span>source for affordable homes and creative solutions<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>What we believe and advocate for includes the following:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Housing can change lives and transform communities <\/span>\u2014 <\/span>it has never been more apparent than right now.<\/span> 2020 was a<\/span> c<\/span>hallenging year for all but imagine trying to quarantine in a substandard home or in an overcrowded space. If this year has taught us anything it<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s that a house is more than a home: <\/span>I<\/span>t<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s a place of refuge and learning. <\/span>A stable home brings with it health benefits, fewer absences and better<\/span> performance<\/span> in school, less illness and a decrease in <\/span>behavioral<\/span> health problems. <\/span>Studies show c<\/span>hildren who have lived in temporary accommodation for over a year are three times as likely to have <\/span>behavioral <\/span>health problems, including depression and anxiety, compared to their peers<\/span>.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Home ownership<\/span> can be a barrier or gateway to <\/span>opportunity <\/span>\u2014\u202f <\/span>allow<\/span>ing<\/span> families to set down roots<\/span>; allowing<\/span> an employee to rise through the ranks<\/span>; helping <\/span>a person become a vested community member. <\/span>Homeowners are community members who are more<\/span> likely to vote and volunteer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Our ability to build in Gypsum provides access to opportunity<\/span>; that <\/span>is<\/span> access <\/span>to<\/span> education, health, healthcare and employment<\/span> according<\/span> to <\/span>according to civil rights, housing, poverty and democracy expert john a. <\/span>powell<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    1. Housing is a means to building wealth <\/span>\u2014 <\/span>the median net worth of homeowners is 80 times larger than renters, according to new data from the <\/span>US Census Bureau.<\/span><\/a> That same report shows that one of the biggest contributors to wealth is home equity. U.S. homeowners have an average net wealth that is 400% higher than that of renters with similar demographics and earnings, and home equity represents the largest proportion of wealth (34.5%) for U.S. households.<\/span>\u202f\u00a0<\/span>powell<\/span> further share<\/span>d<\/span> the <\/span>impact of people living next to opportunity (or not) over decades is <\/span>profound<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      1. Habitat is committed to e<\/span>stablishing partnerships <\/span>\u2014 <\/span>with property and building costs so high, working together is<\/span>key for success<\/span>. T<\/span>he local real estate market is shattering records.\u00a0<\/span> Housing has always been a <\/span>costly and complex<\/span> issue in Eagle County<\/span> and affordable homes aren\u2019t any less expensive to build, so our partnerships are invaluable.<\/span> By working with a variety of partners, <\/span>establishing strong public\/private partnerships, <\/span>we are helping create sustainable solutions for housing stability.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        We teamed with Eagle County Schools in one such partnership: the district donated land, <\/span>and HFHVV built 12 homes creating the opportunity for 12 ECSD employees to <\/span>become<\/span> homeowners<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0We provided the construction know how. The end <\/span>result<\/span>? <\/span>Twelve <\/span>families will call Grace Avenue home.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        I am grateful to live and work in a community that values partnership and creative thinking to find<\/span> solutions<\/span> t<\/span>o make life better for <\/span>local residents<\/span>.
