Congratulations, graduates. You\u2019ve worked hard and are ready for the next stage in life. Embrace the challenges ahead, and savor the hard work that got you to this point.<\/p>\n

People often say, \u201cEverything happens for a reason.\u201d I find myself cringing and silently thinking, \u201cCome on, that\u2019s a lazy excuse. You can do better than explain away challenges than \u2018everything happens for a reason.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

I realize people often say this to make sense of tragedy and deal with their pain or to help manage uncertainty. If that aids in dealing with life\u2019s various challenges, then I would encourage them to continue to lean into it.<\/p>\n

However, I just fundamentally do not buy into the \u2018everything happens for a reason\u2019 philosophy. Rather, I believe we have the ability to learn from any experience we go through in life and that is a choice within our personal power.<\/p>\n

It is this bit of perspective that provides the foundation for my annual \u201cunsolicited advice for graduates\u201d:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Overcoming challenges always involves\u00a0support from others.<\/li>\n
  2. Surround yourself with incredible leaders.<\/li>\n
  3. Be pragmatic. You\u2019ll immediately be a shining star in today\u2019s increasingly polarized world.<\/li>\n
  4. We all have a responsibility to lead.\u00a0Leadership doesn\u2019t recognize job titles.<\/li>\n
  5. Life is about choices. Take responsibility for your choices.<\/li>\n
  6. You don\u2019t always need a plan.\u00a0Instead stay open to opportunities that aligned with your values.<\/li>\n
  7. Mindfulness is all about achieving\u2014and maintaining\u2014clarity, which is difficult when our culture conspires to distract us.<\/li>\n
  8. Perseverance is the key to success. Most people quit when things get difficult.<\/li>\n
  9. Your dreams and fears are neighbors. Embrace them.<\/li>\n
  10. The harder you work the luckier you get. The luckiest people I know work the hardest.<\/li>\n
  11. We’re all humans on a small, floating rock through an infinite galaxy.<\/li>\n
  12. . Xenophobi\u0430 = Ignorance.<\/li>\n
  13. Keep going. Don\u2019t stop. Every generation has been beat down by those who are older and think they know better. Sadly adults today have the megaphone of the internet, but they are attacking because they are scared.<\/li>\n
  14. Together, everyone achieves more.<\/li>\n
  15. Break your goals into small increments.<\/li>\n
  16. Create value\u00a0in all you do.<\/li>\n
  17. Learn the rules then play the game better.<\/li>\n
  18. You can be anything. Choose to be kind.<\/li>\n
  19. Mindset is life\u2019s greatest challenge.<\/li>\n
  20. Be a problem solver.<\/li>\n
  21. If you\u2019re not getting attacked, you\u2019re not trying hard enough (Yvon Chouinard, Patagonia founder)<\/li>\n
  22. Strive to be indispensable to those around you.<\/li>\n
  23. Don\u2019t be afraid of change.<\/li>\n
  24. Success is not linear. Don\u2019t be afraid to move sideways in order to move forward.<\/li>\n
  25. Never stop learning.<\/li>\n
  26. Volunteer. There is no greater gift you can give than your time<\/li>\n
  27. If money or power or ego is what drives you, you will eventually disappoint those around you. But if you are driven by what is meaningful to you, then you’ll have no limits.<\/li>\n
  28. Next time you\u2019re afraid to share ideas, remember that someone once said in a meeting \u201clet\u2019s make a movie about tornados full of sharks\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    As the great Dr. Suess said, \u201cKID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!<\/p>\n
