Every decision we make throughout the day is based in an emotional experience. Some of the decisions lead to great results, while others lead us somewhere else. Yet most of us were never taught how to influence our emotional experience and what that could mean for our lives. The good news is that we can train our emotional patterns to work on our behalf. The 12-week Power of Emotion Series provides all the tools, materials and guidance needed to do just that.

In Power of Emotion, you will learn tools and techniques to identify, shift and consciously choose your emotional state, setting you on a course for mastery. Practical outcomes include expanded emotional intelligence, increased capacity for success in relationships, and the ability to find your center regardless of your circumstances.

Free Introductory Session

Join us on Monday, April 12 from 6-7pm for a first-hand experience of the power that emotions wield and learn practical tools you can begin to apply immediately. This session will provide an in-depth look at how the Power of Emotion Meditation Series can improve your employees’ lives and your bottom line. RSVP HERE

(EDWARDS, Colorado – September 3, 2020) – High Country Human Resource Association and Vail Valley Partnership are proud to present the Community Consciousness series – an Eagle County panel series around diversity, equity & inclusion (DEI).

Each session will revolve around important community topics including public health, our school district, wellness, and leadership development and will allow for the panel members to tell their personal stories of how they have been affected by inequity, data and observations they have found in their professional work regarding how our community is affected by inequity and what we can do as a community to improve. Sessions will end with a list of resources to be able to learn more about that specific topic, and DEI in general. This series is free and open to anyone in the community.

The first session of the series will take place on Thursday, September 17 from 10:00am til noon. We will be joined by Megan Burch, Human Services Director at Eagle County Government, Angelo Fernandez, Deputy County Manager at Eagle County Government, Dwight Henninger, Police Chief at Town of Vail, Magda King, General Manager at Antlers at Vail and Kelly Liken, Food Systems Director at The Community Market.

These community leaders will discuss white privilege, when they realized equity was a problem and the work they have been doing to improve our community. Space is limited so please RSVP online at hchra.shrm.org or vailvalleypartnership.com to reserve your space and get the webinar information.

“Diversity, equity and inclusion have long been an important topic in Eagle County; we are thrilled to partner with High Country Human Resource Association to bring these expert led sessions to help our businesses and community members develop meaningful programs and have a deeper understanding of the issues,” said Chris Romer, President and CEO of Vail Valley Partnership.

The next two sessions will be in October and November 2020 and discuss public health equity and how equity impacts behavioral health and wellbeing. These events will be added to both High Country Human Resource Association and Vail Valley Partnership’s websites as soon as dates are finalized.

Romance on the stage

Relive the famous musical An American in Paris when the national Broadway tour lands at the VPAC Jan. 22

Beaver Creek, Colo.  — The power of love is on full display in An American in Paris: A New Musical, a romantic tale of a young American soldier, a captivating French girl and a European city recovering after the war. The Tony Award-winning musical lands at the Vilar Performing Arts Center on Jan. 22.

An American in Paris takes the stage at the Vilar Performing Arts Center (VPAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. Tickets start at $88. Tickets are available now at the VPAC box office (970-845-8497; www.vilarpac.org). The VPAC is located under the ice rink in Beaver Creek Village (68 Avondale Lane, Beaver Creek, Colorado).

Inspired by the Academy Award-winning film, An American in Paris stops in Beaver Creek this month as part of its national Broadway tour. Written in 1928, the music soon became one of George Gershwin’s most famous compositions. And the 1951 film starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron garnered six Academy Awards and became one of the most famous movie musicals of all time.

To refresh your memory — or in case you’ve never seen the film — the story is set in post-war Paris where romance is in the air and youthful optimism permeates. Hoping to start a new life, World War II veteran Jerry Mulligan chooses newly-liberated Paris as the place to make a name for himself as a painter. But Jerry’s life becomes complicated when he meets Lise, a young Parisian shop girl with her own secret – and realizes he is not her only suitor.

The production features many favorite Gershwin songs, including “I Got Rhythm,” “Liza,” “’S Wonderful,” “But Not for Me,” and “Stairway to Paradise.” The soaring melodies of these recognizable songs are matched only by the impressive dance scenes in what the New York Times calls “Pure joy … An American in Paris is a TRIUMPH.”

The show’s award-winning director, Jeffrey B. Moss, has staged over 35 national and international tours, and often directs newly imagined productions of classic musicals. He also directed the critically acclaimed recent Off-Broadway and London productions of Bock and Harnick’s new musical play, Rothschild & Sons, along with a slew of others.

For an evening filled with romance, adventure and plenty of Gershwin, be sure to nab tickets for An American in Paris, at the Vilar Performing Arts Center on Jan. 22.

Laugh out loud with Tom Papa at the VPAC

Watch one of the top comedic voices in the country at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek Jan. 19

Beaver Creek, Colo. — If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to laugh more in 2020, then the VPAC has you covered. Prepare for a surge of endorphins when stand-up comedian Tom Papa brings his stand-up to the Vilar Performing Arts Center on Jan. 19.

Tom Papa lands at the Vilar Performing Arts Center (VPAC) on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $48. Tickets are available now at the VPAC box office (970-845-8497; www.vilarpac.org). The VPAC is located under the ice rink in Beaver Creek Village (68 Avondale Lane, Beaver Creek, Colorado).

For more than two decades, Tom Papa has been making folks laugh. His show this month at the Vilar Performing Arts Center was even named one of the “Ten Best Comedy Shows in January” in a recent Denver Westword article.

Papa, who is based in Los Angeles, has an impressive resume. He’s found success as an author, podcast host, in TV and film — but stand up is his first love, he told Boise State Public Radio during an interview in early 2019.

“It makes you feel very alive,” he said. “It feels high risk … it’s very in the moment. And anything can go right and anything can go wrong. It’s not like watching NASCAR and waiting for the crash but it’s very alive and I think that energy is something that’s become addictive to me.”

Head writer and regular contributor to the same network’s A Prairie Home Companion antecedent Live From Here, Papa also is a recurring panelist and occasional host of NPR’s No. 1 show Wait, Wait … Don’t Tell Me! In August 2019, Papa began co-hosting What Joke With Papa and Fortune alongside his co-host Fortune Feimster on SiriusXM Radio’s Netflix is a Joke station. Papa also hosts the hit podcast and SiriusXM show, Come to Papa, a weekly, hour-long show featuring Tom exploring the funny side of life, occasionally with guests like Mel Brooks, Ray Romano, Carl Reiner and Jerry Seinfeld.

Several times a year in New York and Los Angeles, Papa hosts a live Come To Papa scripted radio play that is recorded live for the podcast and SiriusXM show. With residencies at Largo in Los Angeles and The Village Underground in NYC, Tom writes the script for each show and casts top actors and comedians — think Matt Damon, Sarah Silverman, Jim Gaffigan and more — to play the roles or perform stand-up, all backed by a live band.

Laugh as Tom Papa explores the funny side of life in his stand-up comedy set at the Vilar Performing Arts Center on Jan. 19.

At the center of every circus rests a 42-foot ring full of thrills, laughs and excitement. With 42FT – A Menagerie of Mechanical Marvels, the creative minds at Cirque Mechanics dares the audience to leap into the circus ring and experience the timelessness of this evolving art form. The shows’ unique mechanical interpretation of the traditional, set alongside a story full of the lore of the historic one-ring circus, creates an experience that leaves audience goers awestruck. The show features a galloping mechanical metal horse and a rotating tent frame for the various acts. Cirque Mechanics signature style is wrapped in acrobatics, mechanical marvels, and a bit of clowning around.

Boston native and German Wheel artist Chris Lashua created the company in 2004. Lashua collaborated with the Circus Center of San Francisco on the show Birdhouse Factory and after its success, created Cirque Mechanics. With its unique approach to performance, inspiring storytelling and innovative mechanical staging, the company quickly found a following in its next extraordinary productions, including Boomtown and Pedal Punk. Spectacle Magazine hailed it as “the greatest contribution to the American circus since Cirque du Soleil”.

Although inspired by modern circus, Cirque Mechanics finds its roots in the mechanical and its heart in the stories of American ingenuity. The shows, rooted in realism, display a raw quality rarely found in modern circus that makes their message timeless and relevant.

See the company The New York Times calls “intelligently conceived and expertly executed” when Cirque Mechanics: 42FT – A Menagerie of Mechanical Marvels takes the stage at the VPAC on Jan. 18.

Tickets are on sale now for the ethical leadership conference, taking place Oct. 23-25, 2019

Students Shoulder-to-Shoulder (SStS) and the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business announced today tickets on sale for the 2019 Global Solutions Forum, an intimate gathering of business, nonprofit, and education leaders aimed to inspire and support ethical leadership.

This year’s theme is “Ethical Leadership with Impact: Cross-sector Collaboration for Social Good.” With special focus on the four key sectors of business, education, philanthropy and nonprofit, the Forum will present speakers and topics that encourage collaboration and authenticity to achieve impact.

“In today’s education, business, government and social spheres, the practice of ethics is under increasing scrutiny, as terms like “corporate social responsibility” and a “culture of good” have become commonplace,” said Doug Allen, associate professor of management at the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver. “We look forward to exploring in this conference what is essential to ensuring real impact through the practice of ethical leadership.”

Speakers confirmed to date include:

  • Andy Fleming, Co-Author, An Everyone Culture and CEO at Way to Grow INC
  • Daniela Papi-Thorton, Author, Learning Service and Former Deputy Director of the Skoll Centre
  • Dr. Michael Burroughs, Co-author, Philosophy in Education and Director, Kegley Institute of Ethics
  • Alejandra Arias-Stella Executive Director, Llama Pack Project (Peru)
  • Dr. Karambu Ringera, Executive Director, International Peace Initiatives (Kenya)
  • Emily Talentino, Executive Director, Give and Surf (Panama)

Attendees can expect to walk away from the conference with tangible examples and concepts related to ethical leadership’s impact. Experts in building healthy organizational cultures and understanding the power of systems learning will expand thinking of social good as an inclusive effort, throughout organizations and across sectors. A full schedule of topics and speakers will be announced as the Forum date approaches.

“Students Shoulder-to-Shoulder’s own organizational model is a shared-value partnership across four major sectors in our society,” said Bob Bandoni, Executive Director for Students Shoulder to Shoulder.  “The global impact of SStS is made possible, as is this Forum, by this model. All of our partners want to contribute to the social good. We can do so through the synergy of working together, by gathering in an inspiration setting and with programming informed by experts in their fields.”

The Global Solutions Forum is targeted toward leaders and aspiring leaders in business, education and nonprofits. Young professionals and students in particular are encouraged to attend, walking away from the three-day conference with inspiration, a supportive network and actionable takeaways for making an impactful difference in society via ethical leadership practices.

The Forum will be held Oct. 23-25 in Vail. Tickets to the 2019 Global Solutions Forum are on sale now. For tickets and more information visit: https://shouldertoshoulder.com/2019gsf/

Mountain peaks are not the only thing sky-high in our community: Insurance premiums in Eagle County are among the highest in the country. Healthcare, unlike a waffle iron or a hula-hoop, is not a discretionary expense. Whether it is an annual check-up, a sports injury, or a serious illness, healthcare — and access to it — impacts everyone in our valley. However, the cost of wellbeing can be more painful than the symptoms it treats.

On Thursday, June 13 at 8:30 a.m. at Colorado Mountain College in Edwards, a panel of healthcare experts and elected officials will gather together to address the pain points in our healthcare system.

“There are many local ‘hot topics’ but few are as life-impacting as health care,” said Kris Sabel, executive director of the Vail Symposium. “We’re pleased to be able to partner with the Vail Valley Partnership to bring this group together to discuss not only challenges in our community, but also solutions.”

Join us as a panel of representatives from Vail Health, Centura, Kaiser and elected officials discuss rising healthcare costs, options for care and many other healthcare issues in the valley.

“Addressing the high cost of health insurance is essential to the continued success and growth of our business community across industry sectors,” said Chris Romer, president & CEO of the Vail Valley Partnership. “A ‘yes, and…’ approach is needed to fundamentally address the issue of health insurance cost; providers, insurance companies, and the government all need to be part of the solution and niche programs need to build on each other to support community needs. We look forward to exploring this in detail with our expert panel.”

About the speakers

Brent Bowman, vice president of strategy for Kaiser Permanente Colorado, is responsible for strategic planning and marketing and is the market leader for Colorado’s Northern, Southern, and Mountain Colorado service areas. Bowman joined Kaiser Permanente Colorado in 2004 and over his career he has served in various roles in multiple regions. Bowman is also board chair for Prime Health, a Colorado-based nonprofit organization that accelerates the adoption of emerging healthcare technologies that address community and safety net needs to improve outcomes and reduce costs.

Lee Boyles, president and CEO of St. Anthony Summit Medical Center, is a transformational leader with a focus on advancing our healing ministry, driving operational outcomes and implementing innovative market strategies, all while improving the health of our communities. Boyles collaborates with key community stakeholders to improve care for patients, increase access to health care and find creative ways to deliver care outside the walls of a hospital. He takes pride in inspiring others to believe in a positive health care future for our communities while navigating the significant changes in the healthcare industry.

Will Cook is the president and chief executive officer of Vail Health, a nonprofit community health care system with 12 locations across Eagle and Summit counties. With a 56-bed hospital, level III trauma center, urgent care clinics, cancer center, cardiovascular services, surgery, childbirth, physical therapy, internal medicine, endocrinology and more, Vail Health is the world’s most modern mountain health care system.

Representative Dylan Roberts has served in the Colorado House of Representatives since 2017. He represents House District 26 (Eagle County and Routt County) and, during his time in office, he has passed over a dozen pieces of legislation. He has been the lead sponsor of the bills to create a public health insurance option, to allow for health insurance co-op formation, drug price transparency and investigation, youth mental health education and suicide prevention and more.

Chris Romer serves as president & CEO of the Vail Valley Partnership (VVP). The Vail Valley Partnership is the regional chamber of commerce, destination sales and marketing organization, and economic development organization representing Vail Valley, Colorado. Romer also dedicates his time to a variety of industry boards and committees including the Western Association of Chamber Executives, Colorado Mountain College, and the Colorado Tourism Office.

Moderator Jon Stavney, executive director of Northwest Colorado Council of Governments (NWCCOG), is passionate about improving local government through sharing information, innovations and best practices. Stavney has worked with NWCCOG since 2016, but he learned public service while “on the job” in various roles over more than twenty years including serving as Mayor of the Town of Eagle, serving as an Eagle County Commissioner and Town Manager of Eagle.
