Eagle County will implement a new local COVID-19 public health order on April 16, in anticipation of the expiration of the statewide executive orders.

The local order is intended to support the following disease response goals:

  • Disseminate vaccine quickly and efficiently
  • Lower disease rates and spread of COVID-19
  • Keep businesses open and workforce employed
  • Keep schools open and help restore hope among youth
  • Protect the people in our communities most likely to have severe disease (save lives)
  • Maintain health and medical system capacity to serve our communities
  • Support the emotional and behavioral health needs of our community 
  • Continue on a path to social and economic recovery

All community members are strongly encouraged to read the entire order at https://www.eaglecounty.us/web/publichealth/publichealthorders. In summary, the new order continues mask requirements for anyone over the age of two in all public indoor environments; continues requirements that all visitors be free of any symptoms consistent with COVID-19 prior to arrival in Eagle County; continues requirements for people who are sick and for people who have been exposed to someone who is sick; and continues guidance for all businesses within the county.

In addition, the order includes capacity limits and restrictions for certain sectors including restaurants, gyms/fitness centers, and indoor and outdoor events based on their 5-Star certification status, available on page 7 of the Public Health Order.

The requirements are slated to be in place through May 27. If at that time, disease incidence and hospitalization rates have decreased and vaccination rates for the total population have reached 60%, restrictions will be greatly reduced.

“This is our opportunity to take advantage of a naturally slower time in our community to greatly reduce disease spread while increasing our vaccination rate,” said Eagle County Public Health & Environment Director Heath Harmon. “If we can focus our efforts on these two goals now, it will set us up for a much better summer in 2021.”

15 de abril del 2021 – El Condado de Eagle implementará una nueva orden de salud pública local de COVID-19 el 16 de abril, en previsión del vencimiento de las órdenes ejecutivas estatales.

La orden local está destinada a apoyar los siguientes objetivos de respuesta a la enfermedad:

  • Diseminar la vacuna de manera rápida y eficiente
  • Reducir las tasas de enfermedad y la propagación del COVID-19
  • Mantener los negocios abiertos y a la fuerza laboral empleada
  • Mantener las escuelas abiertas y ayudar a restaurar la esperanza en los jóvenes
  • Proteger a las personas con mayor probabilidad tener una enfermedad grave en nuestras comunidades (salvar vidas)
  • Mantener la capacidad del sistema médico y de salud de servir a nuestras comunidades
  • Apoyar las necesidades de salud emocional y conductual de nuestra comunidad 
  • Continuar en el camino hacia la recuperación social y económica

Los requisitos están programados para estar en vigencia hasta el 27 de mayo. Si para ese entonces, la incidencia de la enfermedad y las tasas de hospitalización han disminuido, y las tasas de vacunación para la población total han alcanzado el 60%, las restricciones se reducirán considerablemente.

Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) and the EGE Air Alliance are pleased to announce increased service beginning this summer. The changes are as follows:

-For the first time in EGE history, Delta Air Lines will be offering daily, non-stop service to Atlanta, GA (ATL) this summer. This flight will operate on a 757 aircraft daily beginning June 5. The flight will depart ATL at 5:55 p.m. and land in EGE at 7:30 p.m.; and depart EGE at 7:30 a.m. and land in ATL at 12:38 p.m. This new service offers one-stop connectivity from Vail to over 200 domestic and international destinations. Passengers may book at www.delta.com.

-American Airlines will offer new non-stop service to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) this summer, in addition to their year-round non-stop Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) flights. The ORD non-stop flights will be offered daily starting June 3 and will operate on A319 aircraft. ORD flight will depart from Chicago at 9:50 a.m. and land in EGE at 11:47 a.m., as well as depart EGE at 1:50 p.m. and arrive in ORD at 5:45 p.m. Passengers may book at www.aa.com.

-United Airlines continues to offer daily service to Denver International Airport year-round.

“This is great news for our community, as our airlines partners continue to build their year-round service at the Eagle County Regional Airport,” said David Reid, Director of Aviation. “It is a testament to our growing and dynamic community, and our airline partners’ commitment to serve it. It is likely we can expect this trend of additional summer service to continue if the community utilizes this new service.”

Gleaning From Afar

Karie and I met on my first day that I learned of Sacred Cycle. Attending the 2018 Barnbuster Fundraising event, Karie was sharing her story on stage. One after another, before my eyes, the shocking statistics (1 in 4 women in her lifetime) were replaced with faces – survivors in my community. We met again in 2019 at the end-of-season participant retreat as Karie joined us to support and celebrate the current cohort. As I had not interacted with the participant survivors during the program, each time I saw her, I gleaned a bit more of her story.

We take safety, trust, and participant confidentiality seriously. And as such, the Sacred Cycle team is honored when an alumni return to mentor the current participants and/or share how the program continues to be a part of their life. Today you’ll watch and read how three years later, Karie Hassell is still impacted by her time with Sacred Cycle. With intention, I show Karie’s words in italic so you may sit with her thoughts, and her emotions as she shares the creation of a garden labyrinth.

A Tangible Expression Of My Journey

Designing my labyrinth provided me with the canvas where I could see myself and my life’s journey in the path. I know that everyone has a different story linked to life and surviving through violation and victimization. The layers of impact I experienced as a mother were extremely overwhelming. I am trying to guide my young adult children through the comprehension of consent, violation, retaliation through the public, and stabilization of internal processing. Simultaneously, I am trying to understand the actions of others in the world. This video depicts my journey of creation.

Each viewer comes with a bias and a unique lens. For me, these lessons struck a chord.

  1. As I journey with her I step inside the lessons learned through the program. From dry dusty dirt I began.
  2. To find a place of safety and trust. Sacred Cycle taught me to find a place to be one with myself. The grounded earth provides that in my barefoot feet.
  3. There will be moments when you will be triggered. The bike lessons teach a participant survivor to work through the challenges and then bring them into daily life. Balance rocks are elevated and find the sunshine.
  4. You are not alone as a survivor. Every plant is rescued in hopes that they would flourish.
  5. You may not know your way yet. We are here to guide you through and provide tools to being your own journey of healing. I started with the edge – but it had no meaning, so I created one.

My Past Does Not Have To Be My Future

Without Sacred Cycle’s support, I would not have found the personal fortitude to move forward as the guide of understanding within our family. It was every layer that brought something irreplaceable to my healing. Sharing my labyrinth story can support participants, reach others, and inform the deep need for support of healing trauma from within the depths of our beings.

Connection To Save A Life

Thank you for allowing and inviting me to share my process. This work on my labyrinth connected my time at Sacred Cycle and saved my life. It allowed me to reach deep within to reprogram the reaction for my family members. Each of my family members contributed and watched as I worked through my struggles right in the backyard.

Thank you to my family who supported me in the creation of this:

  • I can proudly credit our oldest son, Cy Hassell, for the video editing.
  • Our youngest son, Camden Hassell, for some mean lifting support as I asked for the crazy pieces to be lifted up to the labyrinth.
  • My husband, Roman Hassell, for never wavering with his love and continuing to be patient as I figure out myself.
  • Most importantly, Courtney Hassell, the artist, and daughter who will break the cycle of victimization because of her strength and our insightful healing conversations that I found the willingness to have with the support of Sacred Cycle.

As we connected over this blog piece, Karie shared that she had moved from the home where the labyrinth was created. It was complete and yet sad to leave behind. I asked would she create a new one at her new home? “It’s winter, so we shall see come Spring.”  The cycle of healing for a survivor lasts a lifetime, I look forward to hearing where Karie’s next walk may lead.

Please join me in bringing healing to more survivors like Kasie by spreading awareness of Sacred Cycle. I invite you to explore where in your life a labyrinth has been or may need to be created. Where will you find your own space? Per Karie, “May you find peace and strength in healing.”

As part of its mission to support the community, the Vail Board of Realtors Foundation recently awarded grant and sponsorship funds to 10 nonprofits whose programs serve Eagle County.

A total of $25,250 was awarded to Bright Future Foundation, Eagle County Historical Society, Eagle River Watershed Council, Eagle Valley Land Trust, Friends of Mountain Rescue, Habitat for Humanity Vail Valley, The Literacy Project, The Salvation Army Vail Valley, Vail Rotary Club, and Vail Valley Mountain Trails Alliance.

Qualifying nonprofits demonstrate a commitment to educational programs, offer disaster relief assistance at the local, state, or federal level, or provide housing-related programs.

“We are thankful for the Vail Board of Realtors Foundation’s long-standing support of healthy rivers in Eagle County,” said Holly Loff, executive director of Eagle River Watershed Council.  “It helps to protect the aesthetics, habitat, recreation and economy of our one-of-a-kind community.”

The funding will help with Eagle River Watershed Council’s projects, added Loff.  These include volunteer opportunities to revegetate damaged areas near waterways, remove litter throughout the watershed, and eliminate noxious weeds. ERWC also provides hands-on educational programs on river-related topics in both English and Spanish.

“The VBR Foundation is pleased to support the work these nonprofits do for our community,” said Erica Kirk, Vail Board of Realtors association executive. “Additionally, the VBR Foundation also provides financial assistance to members of the community who are in need due to a catastrophic illness or accident. We encourage the public to apply for assistance when in need.”

Eagle County is announcing a new, simpler grant funding process for early childhood providers for the 2021 grant cycle. The new combined funding grant will support licensed child care centers and home providers to grow their businesses, while emphasizing high quality care, health and safety for the children of Eagle County.

The goals of the new combined funding are to:

  • Support child care centers and homes to remain open
  • Support health and safety of all children
  • Support higher wages for child care professionals
  • Support quality care by providing additional coaching support for providers

The grant application for 2021 was released the week of March 29 and will be open until the deadline on April 30. To be eligible, programs must be licensed in Eagle County no later than April 15 and serve infants, toddlers, and/or preschool children. Early childhood educators must be registered with the Colorado Shines Professional development Information System (PDIS).

Unlike previous years, grant applicants only need to fill out one application in order to receive Eagle County funding. All funding will be paid directly to the provider for approved uses.

“Eagle County is proud to continue to invest in early childhood education and the incredible center administrators and educators that support our children and families,“ said Eagle County Commissioner Jeanne McQueeney. “Safe, quality and accessible child care is essential for our children to grow, parents to work and our economy to function.”

Child care is the work that makes all other work possible; however, the financial challenges of operating high quality centers with trained staff and educators are often overlooked. Eagle County has administered four Early Childhood Provider Support Programs to incentivize and support dedicated child care providers. In 2020, $1,380,000 was invested through Early Childhood Provider Support Programs and directly into the early childhood community through contracts.

Additionally in 2020, financial programs were implemented to support child care centers, educators and, ultimately, families during the COVID-19 crisis. Since May 2020, $251,800 has been invested, positively impacting access to child care for 293 children. According to one Eagle County center, “Without the funds received from Eagle County we would not have been able to continue operations.”

Over the last year we have become fairly comfortable with uncertainty. Our society has honed an ability to roll with the punches and pivot on a dime. It’s a testament to our resiliency and tenacity. And, despite social distancing and the inability to see our family, friends, and neighbors smile behind the face masks, we rely on trust to get through this historic time of disruption.

A year ago, we were completely shut down. The resorts had closed, restaurants shuttered, jobs were at best uncertain and at worst eliminated. Staying at home became the most noble thing we could do to help our frontline health care workers through rapid chaos. Our homes became central to our survival. A roof over your head was more than a luxury, it was a necessity to be able to continue working (if your job is conducive to telecommuting), to educate our children remotely (if you have the technology and Internet connection), and to our safety from a killer we cannot see.

Real estate industry leadership was acutely aware of the importance of home stability and got to work advocating for real estate to be considered essential. Before restrictions began to lift for summer, economic ramifications of the shutdown were glaring. Realtors® didn’t know what to expect but they were prepared, for anything, and we put our trust in their professionalism.

No one could have predicted the Vail Valley’s real estate success that ramped up in late spring and didn’t slow through the end of the year. In fact, predicting that this community would hit record sales in the midst of a pandemic. Yet, here we are. 2020 was a record-breaking year, home prices continue to rise in 2021 due to high demand and a challenging supply of homes for sale.

A Seller’s Market

In today’s struggling economy, real estate is a shining star, says Dr. Lawrence Yun, Chief Economist for the National Association of Realtors® in a presentation on February 28, 2021. Throughout the nation, we are seeing demand outweigh supply resulting in rising home sale prices, increased competition for homes, and urgency. In Eagle County, our numbers are more exaggerated but reflect national trends. The February year-to-date closed sales for all types of properties, including single family homes, duplexes, condos and townhomes have increased approximately 26% over this same timeframe in 2020, pre-pandemic during a thriving economy.

The top reason for increasing home prices is that the number of new listings is simply not keeping up with the number of sales. Although the low market inventory remains a challenge, it is not an insurmountable one, according to Chad Cremonese, Vail MLS 2021 Chair.

“As professionals, we work hard to guide our clients, home buyers and sellers alike, through transitions. COVID was another transition we had to navigate. At the center of what we do as Realtors® is to educate our clients and ourselves about the changing market,” says Cremonese. “Interest in Vail Valley real estate has always been centered around recreation. Add the work-from-home necessity, and it’s easy to see why people are jumping at the chance to own a home here.”

Slim home sale inventory does not seem to deter Cremonese or Dr. Yun. The lack of home supply on the market is also driving demand for builders to respond. Building permits were up in the fourth quarter of 2020 and the start of 2021.

In the VBR Economic Update, Dr. Yun predicts the first quarter of this year will see a minimum 20% increase over the first quarter of last year. That is an increase in sales during a pandemic over the previous year when the economy was at a high point. This seems to be a conservative prediction when we look at February 2021 pending sales in all home categories at 67% increase over February 2020 pending sales. And, year-to-date closings in February 2021 are 18.9% higher than the same time last year.

Additionally, Dr. Yun predicts a 50% increase in home transactions for the 2021 second quarter over 2020. Yet, he qualified the statement with the fact that the entire country was shut down, and the economy came to a grinding halt. The third quarter of 2021 should be similar to that of 2020 with a slight increase and a possible decrease in the fourth quarter. Overall, Dr. Yun estimates the Vail Valley will see about a 15% increase in the 2021 real estate transactions over 2020.

“If mortgages remain steady for the time being, prices may continue to go up,” agrees Cremonese. “Now is a good time to buy. Trust your Realtor® to find what you need and want. Don’t be intimidated, and don’t give up.”

Ever-present challenges

Dr. Yun shared some additional challenges Realtors® should be aware of including a push for mortgage rates to increase. Although, he says, it should not be too dramatic, possibly 3.3% by year’s end, not even a full percentage point over the historic 2.7% low rates. This, according to Yun, is the predictable effect of the economic stimulus as our society enters a phase of herd immunity from COVID vaccinations.

The economic stimulus will increase the national debt and trigger inflation, but do not be alarmed says Yun, it will be nothing like what the U.S. experienced in the 70s or 80s. The Federal Reserve is acutely aware and prepared to manage inflation. And finally, diminished building supplies and stressed supply chains will drive costs on new home building. The 2020 California wildfires and Canadian tariffs are influencing this trend. Although we can’t control wildfires, we can work with Canada and end the tariffs to help with our new home building needs.

“Interest rates are a big factor at several price ranges,” says Cremonese. “Low interest has given people more purchasing power. They can buy in a resort area when before they had not thought about it. It’s important for our clients to understand this market, how it’s different from others, and know that situations that seem impossible can be possible when your Realtor® is knowledgeable about the market.”

“Our focus should not be on a lack of inventory. There are still properties out there. It’s still a good time to buy, and a great time to sell. Inventory is a challenge and more reason to work with a professional. We can help our clients form a plan to reach their goals.”
